Odyssey, 18K pendant with blue sapphire
This was a fascinating but difficult commission. I was given a beautiful sapphire and asked to sculpt a pendant for it: Something that evoked "the sea", and that ubiquitous "fishhook pendant" that surfers have popularized. Within three months my bench piled up with scores of discarded wire-wax models which was...you know, demoralizing. Then one day I came up with an asymmetrical design, half of which seized my attention. I sliced off the ugly half replicated what remained and joined the two good halves. Cast in radiant 18 karat yellow gold with the stone set in its center, the name reflects my arduous journey. This is that one case where I’d have to say the joy of arriving at a destination eclipsed the experience of traveling–Odyssey is one of my favorites!
